Europe, 1800. Gravenstein apple is an old-fashioned apple variety with sweet, tart flavors and crisp, juicy texture. One of the earliest ripening apples, picked in late July and August. Is used primarily as a cooking apple, especially for sauces and cider. An irregularly-shaped green apple with broad red stripes. Short storage life. Triploid, will not pollinate others.
